Dean Thornton

Dean has over 25 years experience in the design industry in private and public sectors.

Dean’s expertise evolved into the broader city shaping urban design of projects, from initial visioning and master planning, through to detailed resolution and implementation.

Dean is principal urban designer at Architectus, a national practice offering: architecture, interior design, urban design and planning services.

Formerly he was lead urban designer at Development Victoria. He provided design direction and review across a wide portfolio of projects covering:

  • land development
  • mixed use renewal sites
  • precincts

Dean has also held senior design positions at Jacobs and Meinhardt. He has experience leading design teams within multi-disciplinary practices including 14 years with Hassell. As a principal, he led complex projects across infrastructure, industrial, education and residential sectors.

Dean holds a Bachelor of planning and design (Hons) and a Masters of landscape architecture from the University of Melbourne.

He has been a member of the OVGA’s design review panel since 2014. His association with AILA includes a 2-year position on the Victorian Executive. Dean has been:

  • a member of the LXRA’s Urban Design Advisory Panel
  • a jury member for the 2017 Victorian UDIA Awards
  • on AILA design juries
  • on education committees
  • on public sector committees
