James is exploring the possibility of different housing models within the Australian context.

James is one of the founding directors of Six Degrees Architects. With others the practice was developed over 27 years into a nationally recognised design firm.

Six Degrees has influenced the fine grain urban design of Melbourne. A formative project for the practice in the early 90’s, was Meyers Place Bar, the first of Melbourne’s back lane bars.

James is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects and has expertise in the following sectors:

  • education
  • heritage
  • commercial
  • multi residential

He is a foundation member of the Nightingale Housing Board.

James has:

  • provided design review services for local councils and Development Victoria
  • sits on the Human Research and Ethics Committee for the Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital
  • is a guest lecturer nationally and internationally. James has taught at the University of Melbourne
  • served on and chaired, many AIA awards juries

He chaired the 2018 National Leadership in Sustainability Jury.
