Vale Peter Mould

It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of Peter Mould, former New South Wales Government Architect, trusted colleague and dear friend of the OVGA.

Beyond his immense legacy in New South Wales, honoured by our colleagues at the Government Architect's Office NSW, Peter had an enduring impact on our work in Victoria.

A member of our expert State Design Review Panel from its inception in 2012, Peter brought his knowledge, wisdom and passion to almost 100 design reviews. Equally at ease debating the detail of an apartment layout or the future of a city precinct, he had the ability to offer constructive critique on every project.

Peter was generous with both his time and expertise. His long-term role in government, underpinned by iterative advocacy for better architecture, urban design and heritage, led to him becoming a trusted critical friend, helping us navigate the complexities of OVGA’s newer role in government with clarity and purpose. Through the national network of Government Architects (GANA), he was a tireless advocate for collaboration, helping build a culture of knowledge-sharing that continues today.

What set Peter apart was not only his expertise, but the grace with which he conveyed his message. Warm, charming and witty, a sharp critique was delivered in a way that left a design team feeling wiser, encouraged and eager to do better.

We will miss Peter enormously: as a colleague, mentor and friend. He was one of the invisible enablers of our profession and a true champion of the public good.

Our deepest condolences go to Peter's family and loved ones. Few people can genuinely claim to have left their city better than they found it. Peter Mould was one of them. His legacy lives on in the places he helped shape and the people he inspired.

Peter Mould was NSW Government Architect from 2005 to 2012. He was Visiting Professor and later Adjunct Professor at UNSW. In 2011 Peter was awarded the Australian Institute of Architects (NSW) President’s Prize for his contribution to architecture. He was a Life Fellow of the Institute, a Councillor for the International Union of Architects (2014-17), and a Member of UNESCO-UIA Joint Committee for the World Capital of Architecture (2019-21).
